Evaluation of Maps and Networks Creative Process

I haven't officially installed my 'Under Surveillance' installation yet as I will only have access to the room for installation in the evening of the 14th December 2016 and then it will only be installed in the Universities Front Gallery space from January 8th 2017 and will be displayed through till February. However, I thought it would be helpful for me to evaluate the process of where I started and how I got to my finalised idea.

I feel like at the very beginning of this project when we were given this brief that I had not much of an interest in Installation and therefore originally was hoping to keep my final piece simple to me by making a film or photographic image as my final outcome. However, throughout all the workshops, lessons and a lot of independent research the idea of installation got more and more interesting to me. Especially the idea of installation being interactive for a viewer as this is new technologies being used in art to get a message across. I also began to love the idea of mixed media as well. Soon I began to try and push myself by thinking of installation ideas which would get a strong message that meant something to me across and to push my artistic skills. I began to look at Surveillance and the idea of people watching others as this always interested me and I have found its becoming a popular theme on things like TV Programs. However, I wanted an idea which put this idea of being watched into realistic terms and this led me to wanting to show people how CCTV and Surveillance is used so heavily in Society to monitor them. This led to me developing off of my thoughts on this as my idea.

I felt my initial idea linking to Surveillance and the use of Mirrors, Projections and Soundscapes was very complicated looking back at it. At the time however in my mind I thought it would prove more of a point if I had a lot more elements involved. I soon realized after more discussion amongst my creative colleges, some more research and even a trip to London Galleries to see Installations that simpler installation were actually more effective and generally tended to look more effective with in the space as well. This led me to strip down my Surveillance Idea and completely assess how I could get my point across in a much more simplistic style that an audience would interpret a lot more effectively. I had to begin by thinking into exactly what I wanted to express to my viewers. My piece was all about the Idea that Surveillance had lost its effective meaning to my generation and younger generations who have been brought up in a society where we see CCTV cameras and Surveillance everywhere. We have grown up with them therefore we never take a chance to think about what they really are there for. Essentially what I don't like about it is that they are used to watch us. I understand it was originally for safety purposes but I feel like the way we are now monitored on every aspect of our life such as social media means that it has crossed a line from being protective to now being invasive. My piece was meant to make people realize that CCTV is other people monitoring us by putting a human face to it which is in my piece the viewers own face behind the CCTV having them observing themselves on a live feed. This is looped, as is the sound to make it much more intense and to reinforce this idea of your image being spread without your permission. I feel like once I had sorted out what I specifically wanted to achieve with my piece it was a lot easier to narrow down how I would go about it. I cut down all unnecessary elements and only incorporated useful equipment and styled it in a way that looks clean cut and almost clinical to make common connections in people’s head to government. I am much happier now I have done this because it has left me a lot more confident in my idea and how it will look in the gallery. I also feel it has a stronger meaning to it now that I have taken the time to research into it more and think about it more.

I feel like when it comes to physically installing it I won't have many problems as I have already tried and tested the equipment I have hired it out to make sure the theory of the live feed works which it did. I also had a meeting with a technician who showed me everything available to me so I know I have now booked out everything I could need that will make it most effective. I have also through doing a Risk Assessment for my installation found the safest ways to put it up in the proposed Gallery space meaning that things like trailing wires won't be an issue. I am hoping that it will run smoothly and as long as all the equipment works it will be as effective as I feel I can make it.

I think if I were to do this project again I would take more time at the beginning to really think into what I want as my message to be so I could have begun effectively developing it back then. However, I am happy that I took the journey I did to get to this final piece because I am very confident in it now and I would have never expected at the beginning to have wanted to make an installation piece so it’s been fun to try something new.

Updated Risk Assessment for my Installation - Maps and Networks

In order to get my installation signed off and get my equipment out for the installation I needed to hand in a Risk Assessment. I had already done one previously but I have now updated it ready for sign off because my idea has been finalised now. Here is my updated Risk Assessment:

This Risk Assessment has allowed me to reflect on the best and safest way to install my piece in order to keep myself and the audience safe. I have used information I have gathered from technicians and tutors to help inform me on this as well and to update this.

Evaluation of my role as Assistant Director in our Studio Shoot

Overall I felt like I made a successful AD for my group and our piece. This was due to number of things I did during pre-production as well as the actual shoot days.

I feel during pre-production I had a lot of mine own paper work which I worked on with the Director such as the Treatment and the Synopsis. I also as well as doing my own paperwork was involved in helping others with their role and their paperwork. For example I arranged a meeting for the camera team and our Storyboard artist in order to help her know exactly what se needed to do for the storyboard. I also found I was the main communicator between members of our group. There was a few struggles in communication between th Producer and the Director and times which was soon resolved by myself making sure everyone was on the same page. Also any decisions that were made by the Director I made it my job to make all members of the group aware of this by linking them to my blog posts about meeting they missed etc and sending them messages with all the information in. I found as this pre-production process went on I began to get more involved in the decision making as the Director didn't always know what to do. For example I worked very hard with the camera team alone to make sure the shot list was finalised and match the new routine. I also was involved in a lot of the physical work such as the auditions. I did learn from this work that time management was key as AD because a lot of what I was doing was organising the Director and the remembers of the group as well as myself. Before I got my time mamnagement sorted I was finding the process stressful but as soon as I found a good workflow my stress levels reduce and everyone in the group was a lot happier too.

I then felt doing shooting that even though I was meant to take a much more backseat role and just keep everyone on schedule etc I actually had to step up to Directing as the Director wasn't sure what he was meant to be doing on set specifically. He also made the group and myself aware that he wasn't comfortable at talking to actors which I was so I volunteer to Direct the actors but in turn this led on to me needing taking a much bigger role and co-directing the piece as well as just directing the actors. I did try my best to also be the person checking the shots and schedule which I did but I found that because I was now doing a lot more jobs than just AD it was beginning to get a little but stressful. This meant our Producer stepped in and began being the time keeper and telling us what shots and set ups were coming next etc. This helped a lot as it meant I could just aim my focus on the actors. I felt I director well because I knew how to talk to them in a professional manor after our Directing Actors Workshop. However I also bonded with them and had really good working chemistry with both of them which meant as well as getting the job done good we also had fun while doing it. This kept the actors happy and in tern meant their results got a lot better as well because they were enjoying themselves. I felt like once we got the flow of the group on sorted during the first dy of shooting it meant the second day of shooting went so much smoother because we all knew what we were doing. I would say this shoot process has actually taught me a lot more about how to be a Director as well as just an Assistant Director and this has left me knowing Directing is a future pathway for me. I feel I succeeded not only as an individual with this project but also as a member working with in the group to help others as well. As much as I have loved this project my main regret is not putting myself forward to be the Director in the beginning because I doubted how capable I would be but now having worked in such a professional way I feel like in the future I could do this. I felt my strongest point was my communication with everyone in my group on set but also in pre-production. I was constantly checking on what everyone was doing making sure they were happy and therefore helping them achieve the best results they could.

At the end of the day this project and shoot has been a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work which I feel has paid off. I have learnt so much about how the dynamics of film groups work and how roles work together. Now I am very much looking forward to the editing stage of this piece.

Proposal for my Installation Piece - Maps and Networks

Following my learning agreement which my teacher had already seen I had to edit this and write it up into a proposal for the Curator of the gallery to review so we could get the green light for the exhibition. We also had to come up with a name for our piece. I chose to call it 'Under Surveillance' because I began looking into a lot of fancy words for CCTV and Surveillance etc but then I realised as I am appealing to younger audiences of my age and downwards I wanted to keep it simple also like my piece is. So thats what led me to come up with 'Under Surveillance' because that is essentially the basis of what my piece is. Its all about giving Surveillance a human face but for the audience to reach this conclusion the title of my piece will lead them to know that it is based on Surveillance as a starting point for them. Here is my Proposal that was sent to the Curator:

Under Surveillance

An installation with a live feed camera wired up to a TV. The camera will be directly opposite the TV so that it creates a looped live image between camera and TV. This means the viewer will stand in the middle and see themselves from all angles and multiples of themselves yet will never be able to see there face as the camera is behind. Because they are looking at their own bodies as if it were cctv this adds a human face to this idea of surveillance. I will create a soundscape made using the camera's microphone itself that picks up the sound of the viewer and loops it to the TV to further reinforce my point.

Thankfully our exhibition has got the go ahead to be installed in the front gallery space of the university and along the main corridor which I am very excited about. I now need to come up with an official name and artist statement to accompany my piece for when it is installed.

Finalising my Installation and gaining material - Maps and Networks

As my installation assessment date lots and the exhibition in January draws closer I had to find myself all the materials I need for my installation piece. I began my search at the Equipment Hire store in University to see what they had there and if I would be able to have it for all the dates I needed. The Equipment I needed to hire was:

- Canon Legria G25 Camcorder
- 10 meter HDMI cable
- HDMI to HDMI joiner

I was able to book all these items for the 14/12/2016 AM to 16/12/2016 PM to give me time to set up my installation on the evening of the 14th ready for assessment on the 15th. Then I can pack up and hand it all back on the 16th December. Then I also booked it for the 09/01/2017 AM till the 01/02/2017 PM. This will give me a week from the 9th January to set up my installation and then it will be on display for a month till February.

Then for the TV monitor I need I decided not to hire it from the Equipment store as I knew there was already such a large number of students in my class needing one and there was limited supplies. Also I knew that my own TV monitor already works with this equipment and for my set up as I have previously tried and tested it. So I have made the decision to bring my own TV in from home for all the days it is needed along with the remote for it so that I will be able to set up the volume and brightness etc how I want it.

I then needed the CCTV signs which I had chosen to put on my piece. I found the cheapest ones which were also A3 size and on foam board which looked how I wanted. I brought these on Amazon and ordered them to my house. I decided I needed two on my piece. One for each white plinth but I decided to order three so that I had one spare incase any got damaged. Here are what they look like now they have arrived:

Lastly I needed to get the white plinths but as I have been advised by several people now that is something to find on the week of setting up my installation because they are so freely available and also there is no way of booking them out anyway as they are a general supply for the gallery space we are in anyway. I also am constructing a box to cover over the camera on top of the white plinth but as I only need this for the official exhibition I am going to construct this durning installation week in January. I went for this sign because these are the iconic ones which when I was younger I remember the most and use to see everywhere. Also because these signs are to give it cultural placement especially in the younger generations mind I feel these will be the ones they would have seen most as well as they are also the most childish looking ones which were meant to appeal to the younger people back then.

I am very happy now I have my idea all worked out and I know how to set it up and have all the equipment I need. I am really looking forward to being able to set it up so I can finally see how it will officially look.

Finale call: 04:15pm
Pack up: 04:15pm – 05:00pm

This call sheet was every precise on timings but I felt this was needed because our piece is so technically challenging when it comes to lighting and camera due to the fight scenes.

I felt like I knew what my role would be today as it had previously been discussed in a meeting. My team and myself felt like it made more sense for me to step up and be working very closely with the actors and directing them on their actions etc because I had a greater understanding of how to direct them and talk to them effectively where as Logan (Director) admitted he didn't feel very comfortable talking to actors. I was more than happy to do this as I felt like I would be good at this as I had really enjoyed the directing actors workshops we had had leading up to this. Also Molly and Gabby our Actors were both lovely people anyway who were on the acting course and had lots of experience therefore took direction really well. Also having seen them in auditions and rehearsals I already knew where both their strengths and weaknesses were and therefore knew what bits needed to be worked on.

I began this morning by getting the girls into their costumes and makeup which Chloe helped me with. The costumes looked good and the makeup really added to the facial expressions on camera which was what we were hoping for. I also had to make sure they were both comfortable in their costumes. I then let them have enough time to warm up before we began filming. We were unfortunately running behind this morning due to a few technical difficulties with the camera and also a few members showed up late as well which wasn't helpful. I just spent the extra time I had with the actors helping them run through the whole routine/piece. I had also made changes to the action as well since we last saw them because of how the set turned out and also due to the camera teams change in shot list. I ran them through these changes which they took on board very well and then they rehearsed them so before we began filming the actors were up to speed on the full routine and what was expected of them. I then with me had a copy of the Call sheet, Shoot schedule, shot list and Script so I was able to answer any of the questions they had about where the camera would be etc at certain points.

I found that I developed a really effective flow through out the first day of shooting which was that I would brief the actors on everything they had to do on each scene and let them know what there starting point was in each shot and where the end point would be. I would then allow them a run through if they felt like they need it or if I felt like they needed it. Then we would always do at least two or three takes of each shot and inbetween each take I would make sure they had everything they needed such as water and refreshments. I then would give them feedback on their previous take starting with the positives first then giving them some constructive pointers on ways they could improve it if it was needed. I felt like me and the actors had really good working chemistry because we were all having so much fun but also getting the job done well. I also felt like because I formed such a good relationship with them both I was able to get more from them and their acting because they were in a happier environment. They were such good people to work with and I will be very happy to work with them in the future.

What I also found out on set was that myself and Logan's roles seemed to change slightly. Because I was directing the actors this meant I was also in constant communication with the camera team and sound team to explain to them what the movement was of each shot and where my actors would be exactly so that they didn't accidentally get in the way at all and could set themselves up appropriately. Also the camera team and sound team were asking me to get the actors to stand in their relevant places as well so they could focus etc which meant that I ended up very involved in the technical side too. This left me taking the Directors role a lot of the time on set which worked for me and Logan as he was much more comfortable just watching what was going on and speaking up when he felt a change was needed or a decision had to be made but apart from this I was Directing in more of an active way. This has made me really consider Directing as my future pathway because I loved these shoot days and I was able to fulfil the job role of Assistant Direct and go above and beyond this when it was needed.

This shoot day went very well however due to our late start and the camera team  having a few technical difficulties through out the day we ended 2 hours later than expected. Luckily I kept the actors happy enough that they really didn't mind this so we were able to get everything we wanted to shoot today done. Once we had ended the shooting for this day I dismissed our actors and went on to backing up all the files from today onto my hard rive as well as a few other people so that we had it in at least 3 places. We then tidied up and got ourselves as prepared as we could be with the lighting set up etc for the following day.

Katherine allowed longer for set ups on this second day because of how long some people had delayed us on the day before this. The camera team were partly responsible because they had a lot of issues with the equipment and technical difficulties which weren't all there fault but I felt like they needed to be more prepared for these. Also to help prepare them more I had a chat with them after the first day of shooting and asked them to read over their shot list and shoot schedule before they come in the next day to speed up the set up process between shots and I also suggested they set up all the equipment at the start of the day so that they can change it much easier and quicker during the day. This was all based on my observations I made of them on shoot day 1. They took all this on board and when they came in earlier on shoot day two and got themselves ready very quickly I knew that they had prepared themselves much more and were much more ready for today.

Everyone got ready a lot quicker for shooting today which was because all the problems we had yesterday were resolved before today so we could get straight on. Also my actresses were much more prepared for today in terms of knowing the routine a lot more because of how much of it they had done yesterday. Because today was mainly natural lighting set ups it meant a lot for he shots we were doing were all from the beginning and the ending of the piece. I briefed them of this and also again I had all my call sheets, shoot schedules, shot lists etc so I was able to answer all their questions again.

Today we were working very much in the same wok flow as yesterday which meant me mainly focusing on the actors and directing them and also fulfilling their needs. I also again was keeping an eye on the technical aspects as well but the camera team were functioning so well today that they sorted themselves out most the time. I also felt like Logan stepped up a bit more today in terms of directing actively which I think was based on him taking the time to see how the set worked then knowing where he was needed and when. I still felt I had become much more of a co-director with him over this process rather than just assistant Director though as I had put in so much time and hard work. People stepping up today meant I had much more time to just make the actors my focus which meant I had a lot of time to assess their performance and find ways of helping them improve it and get more into character. I feel that today they were getting tired which was fine and just meant I had to find ways to keep them in high spirits and energise them with much more frequent breaks and rests. Again though we had lots of fun together whilst also getting the job done well! Their was also a lot of close ups filmed today so I kept topping them up with makeup and also making them aware of how important certain facial expressions were to us.

The last day of shooting actually ran so smoothly due to us all learning what went wrong yesterday and fixing this that we needed up by lunch being at least 2 and half hours in front of schedule which was good because we weren't rushing yet we knew we could finish earlier therefore giving us more time to back up the rushes and clean and tidy the studio. Also the actors were getting tired so I knew they would be a lot happier being able to leave a bit earlier which we did. I am even happier with how today went and in general I am so proud of the group and of myself through out this shoot. I am also really going to miss working with them and especially my actors! This whole process and helped me really gain an understanding of how important everyones roles are to creating a successful piece. It also has shown me how much hard work directing can be but also how rewarding it is and this has led me to realise Directing is really what I want to focus on in my future.
