We began by backing the footage up from her hard drive onto an extra hard drive of our own to have as the editors hard drive and also another back up onto another hard drive she supplied. We spent many hours backing up on hard drives on the first day as she had so many large files from 2 weeks of filming that needed to be transfered over.
The second day we then needed to get this footage onto our area of the Nexus in the Avid editing suite. We transferred it over and this took many hours. Once the transfer was complete we then put the media into Avid and made sure to link it and transcode it which again took a lot of time but we only did this with clips we knew we were likely to use so we didn't worry bout any dud footage or clips that weren't usable for whatever reason. These decisions were made by previewing all the clips with the Director and between ourselves but also by referring to the script supervisors notes on which takes were the most successful. We then ended up with all the clips needed on our area of the nexus and transcoded in avid. They are arranged by filming dates so we can work out which scenes are which and follow the script and script supervisors notes when it comes to editing.
We also had a meeting with the director to talk about the kind of editing style she wants. She asked for it to be kept basic but with some moments of tension and a lot of lingering shots to show the intense emotion. She referenced a film which I will watch before the actual editing begins in April. This is 'Diary of a teenage girl'. She also referenced the genre of 'Mumble Core' which I will look into but essentially this means it looks like your watching someone's real life. This was very helpful to know the style and we also discussed scene by scene how the director wanted it to feel and this will help a lot in the editing process. We also discussed possible sound tracks that will be used in certain sections pending permissions so we can get a feel for these as well and edit with these in mind. Here are the notes I made from that meeting which will be more than useful when editing to help us keep the directors vision in mind while adding our own creative flare. Here are the notes:
I am very excited to get onto editing this project in April and will analyse references in preparation for this.
