1. Manipulating Family Photos- In particular I want to take 5 of my personal family photos spread out from amongst the years and then remove myself from them using Photoshop. This will be to make a observation on the impact that I have made in my short lifetime so far which is ironic considering normally you would debate what impact you have made when you get a lot older. I could not find any other artists or visual aids which would help this particularly specific idea however it is a very simplistic concept at this stage. The feedback I received from the group tutorial was that this concept was original however it was lacking in development. I needed to start thinking into how it will be viewed by an audience. For example how would an audience know that I was once in that empty space. This got me thinking and I realised that maybe as a potential idea this wasn't a very achievable one at this stage as it would be very difficult to show the audience the meaning behind what I am doing and also it requires some very technical Photoshop skills. I decided by the end of this discussion that I would find some personal family photos and try some experiments first on Photoshop to see if I had the skills needed for this idea and also to see if I could make this idea accessible to many audiences by picking a photo which would be obvious that I am missing.
2. Reconstructing Family/Iconic Photos- This idea involves reconstruction as its main theme because I like the idea of creating famous images with my own friends and family or even just myself. The other way that I was thinking of approaching this idea was to reconstruct old family and friend photos with people now were older however after looking on the internet this seems to have been done so many times before that it looses all sentiment. Here are some visual aids which I showed to help explain myself.
This image is more about recreating iconic images in a fun way the same way it has been done in this image here using children to recreate a famous photo of the Beatles. My worry with trying to do this is finding locations and costumes on a budget and with the short amount of time that I have. Also it has been done so many times that I feel it now lacks meaning.
I feel like these recreated family images appealed to me most out of all the ones which appeared after internet searching because they were composed really nicely and showed progression of the people well. I however was so shocked by the amount that came up because this idea/concept has been done so many times before that like I explained before it doesn't have much sentiment behind it or personal meaning any more.
The feedback that I gained about this idea was that it couldn't develop too far and out of all my ideas had the least potential because it was quite simplistic concept wise. Also people found it very off putting that they had seen this idea done so much before because it meant it was very unoriginal to an audience. After taking everything on board I realised that this was my least favoured idea and that I did want to do it because I knew it wasn't going to emote an audience because firstly it has been done so many times before and secondly it was again a very personal matter.
3. Peoples Traces/What they leave behind- This idea has always interested me because it is less personal and instead I a hoping will be a documentation approach on the world around me. I want to instead of focussing on the traces people intentionally leave I want to focus on the traces they never consider that they leave. For example I want to go to restaurants and cafe's and take a photo of what people leave on the table when they are done with there meal or drink etc. I feel like this could allow me to compose some really graceful images which actually reflect people who art even aware of the traces they leave. I found an artist called Karen Storr who focused on traces left by humans but in a slightly different ay. Here are some visual ads I showed of her work.
What I really like about her images is that they focus in on eh tiniest little details left by humans and make this into a whole work of art which inspires the audience to really think about the impact that they make on the world weather they realise it or not. A quote of her's which I really liked was this 'There is a beauty in the austere decaying marks made by the human hand, taken over by natures.' This really inspires me with this project and I will go on to research her work further to help me develop.
Out of all my ideas this final gained the best response because everyone seemed to think that it could go on to be developed as a concept as well making a remark about humanity and the carelessness nature we can have for example when we leave litter behind. I also got feedback that it had a lot of potential to be done in a really beautifully composed way so almost being ironic by making a beautiful piece of art of of someones rubbish and leftovers. I feel most inspired by this idea now especially since my tutor has given me some really useful names of other artist who take different approaches to this idea so I can now go on to research and develop further.
