Now that I have learnt a lot of skills on After Effects in preparation for this piece I decided I needed to look into the concept of this project a lot more so I began by searching out twin screen pieces on the internet. Here is some I found and why I liked them:
1) Re-edited Version of Film High Art - Editor Unknow, 2009
I found this on YouTube by looking up split screen art work and it caught my eye because of the interesting shapes and imagery it used. An unknown editor has taken the film 'High Art' and re-edited this short split screen piece which I really like. I feel like it tells the story in a really ghostly way by having certain actions and reactions enhanced through repetition of the imagery in multiple parts of the screen. It also tells us a lot about the original film through very small means but does so in an interesting way by allowing us to find out the story as each square is slowly revealing a new element of the scene. I feel like the shapes of the split screen mimic the confusion of the characters in the story. The particular influence I find in this piece in relation to my twin screen project is that I must really consider how my imagery on the two screens will work together to tell a story or give across my meaning. Sometimes withholding information can be more valuable to the piece rather than making things too literal.
2) Split Screen: A Love Story - James Griffiths 2011
Again I found this through looking at split screen work on YouTube and I really liked this piece because it was really consistent with the way the imagery from each side matched up symbolically but was obviously of different places. It shows a love story from the perspective of two people and does it really simplistically through use of them meeting at the very end and finally the two characters are revealed. Like I was saying the imagery even though its of different places flows really nicely from one to another and technically this must have been a challenge which is why I appreciate it. I feel like it is showing me the importance of having a common link between my two screen in the twin screen project as this will help to keep my piece moving and tell a story.
3) Split Screen Magic - Danny Rodriguez 2012
again this is a piece I found on YouTube but this isn't really a story piece and instead is more of a personal documentary of where this film maker lives. I didn't really like the camera footage used but it was the way the screen slowly split which really gained my attention. I liked how as he found more directions to go in the screen would split and then this would start a new path. Then they all linked back up to each other at the end through the common theme imagery of the sign. I like the form of this piece and feel like this helps me to consider how mine could be slowly develop into a twin screen piece instead of just having two separate images straight away. It has also reminded me to make sure there is some kind of development in the piece so that it goes somewhere therefore I need a clear structure like this one.
Looking at these twin screen pieces along with others I have found it has really given me more inspiration into how twin screen can be used in a playful and exciting way. It has also inspired me to think about the advantages of twin screen and how I could convey meaning through it either with contrasting imagery or complimentary imaginary.
