Installation Artwork/film

What should installation artwork be?..

- With Installation I think it is key to make the viewer part of it wether this be emotionally or physically. This will create a much more immersive piece which gains more of a response.

- Installation art tends to be a lot more theatrical to make an impact on the viewer and set across messages in a much stringer way.

- Installation artwork tends to be quite experimental because it combines a lot of medians together in exciting way and is usually unique especially in the way that a lot of installation artist don't actually make much of a profit for their work if its on location. It is more about the message they are trying to get a across and they way in which they do this is their choice.

- I think it is very key to make the artwork personal by bringing your own experiences and view points to it so you can connect with it better therefore connecting with the viewer a lot more.

- You are usually expanding beyond a 2D film experience and instead are finding ways to make your work interesting from multiple view points and for many different people.

Looking into some installation pieces you can see how they try and effect the audience, However it is hard for me to get a proper feel for them myself as I haven't seen these first hand but I am doing my best from research and videos people have done of them:

Tony Ousler - 'Bound Interrupter' (2012)

Oursler combines sculpture, film projection and performance work here to create this installation. I like the way there are so many small pieces too this which have symbolism working together to form the bigger picture. Many different objects have been combined together to make this piece such as found objects, mounted computer prints, colorful blown glass, welded metal and cast resin which then has projections put over the top to animate it and bring the scene to life. This piece along with a few others explore relationships and identity. It is said to show characters in the projection as if they are under a love spell of sunsets and oxytocin, the love hormone and neuromodulator. I feel like if you were there experiencing this piece for itself the large scale of it would make a massive overwhelming impact on you but when you begin to look at all the smaller symbols and projections with in it you start to experience a more emotional response to the characters as they are under this spell all acting in different ways effected by love. I like this piece because I have always been interested in how projections can be used in art and this is a very exciting way to do so.

Pipilotti Rist - Ever is Over All (1997)

I have looked at Rist's work previously to help me with my experimental film studies however she is also very influential to look at in terms of her installations. This piece is a great example of how installation films can be kept simple but still make a massive impact. This piece was installed in a gallery in a corner wall so in the corner the left wall depicted this women carrying a flower smashing up cars and then the wall on the right is macro shots of flowers. This piece just looks round again and again however because each film is slightly different lengths you get a different combination of images each time which is an interesting concept in itself. This piece is to show female empowerment and compare women to natural wildlife and how these flowers (women) can be strong when not always expected to be. I feel like even though it is a simple installation it gets across its themes and points well however I would like to try and take this idea again of projections and maybe use it in a more complex manor.

Anthony Gormley - Blind Light (2007)

Blind Light, Hayward Gallery, London, 2007 from Antony Gormley Studio on Vimeo.

This installation piece is very different to Gormleys other work which includes 'Angel of the North' and other familiar statues and figures. He focuses a lot on the human form and I feel like this piece does that but in a very different way. It is a small glass box filled with dry ice to the point where you can't see in front of you even though its really bright hence the name 'blind light'. I think it links to his human form work in the way that it creates these really weird silhouettes of the people in their not only from the outside looking in but also when you see people in there all you can see till your very close is just a really ghostly silhouette. Here is the artist quote he has written about it: 'Architecture is supposed to be the location of security and certainty about where you are. It is supposed to protect you from the weather, from darkness, from uncertainty. BLIND LIGHT undermines all of that. You enter this interior space that is the equivalent of being on top of a mountain or at the bottom of the sea. It is very important for me that inside it you find the outside. Also you become the immersed figure in an endless ground, literally the subject of the work.' So I feel like this also explains that he is trying to make a connection with nature and the outside world so it could fit quite nicely into the theme of maps and networks. I really like this piece however things like this would be very hard to do for our installation due to health and safety regulations.

Chris Milk - The Treachery of Sanctuary (2012)

This video is really informational on the piece 'The Treachery of Sanctuary' by Milk. I think he has made this piece using his background on life and past experiences he has felt and then brought them into a new interactive way for the audience to experience them too. I feel like he has succeeded in making an installation that gets the audience involved but also causes them to have an emotional response getting lost in the moment almost. I feel like the technology that went into making this idea is very complex but seeing how much hard work end into it has made me see what could be possible on a smaller scale with my skills. I like the idea that he is transforming people into creatures and this could link again very well into maps and networks when looking at networks in nature. I could replicate maybe a similar style myself but with the use of silhouettes and light.

These artists and installation I have looked out have helped me see all the possibilities there are for installation ranging from very basic to much more complex. I am hoping once I start developing my own idea I will now have a lot more knowledge on how I can develop this to create an installation piece out of it that will be effective.
