She liked the topic of Surveillance that my idea was trying to cover and we agreed that this concept of Surveillance was defiantly an interesting one to look into. However she felt like my installation was quite complicated and I needed to think of ways to keep it simple. Firstly we spoke about the projector which was going to be my way of adding a video element and Rosie pointed out this may not be necessary because it feels too full on and also is a bit overkill as it tells the viewer exactly what the piece is about. Therefore after talking it through I did realise that my projection idea wasn't needed anyway and I myself wasn't even sure how I would have put this onto the installation anyway. Instead I would much rather focus on the reflections along with lights and sound collage to make an atmosphere.
We then spoke about why I am using mirrors instead of cameras and I explained that I was trying to add a human face to the idea of cctv to help further instate the idea that cctv is people watching you. However Rosie raised concern that mirror have such string connotations of identity and image etc that she was worried the meaning of my piece would be lost. I have to agree this had always been one of my concerns with this idea. So she suggested that a live feed camera with a monitor could be used in the same way. I had thought into this myself previously but was worried about the technology becoming too hard to put together. Rosie suggested that I give it a try using a camera from equipment hire which if I plug into a tv and set it to live mode I will create a live feed. We then discussed that this live feed could be played with in a fun way just like the mirrors because if you face the camera at the TV you create a loop same as facing two mirrors to one another. Also when the person looks at the screen if they stand in the middle of the two they would be able to see the back of themselves which isn't an angle usually seen. This would link to cctv in the same way the mirrors do because the viewer is still watching themselves. I thought this could actually be really interesting if I could pull it off so I have decided I will experiment with this next. Rosie also made me realise in our conversation that this would probably look much smarter in a gallery and be easy to install then full length mirrors would be.
We went on to talk about the Sound Collage that I wanted to create so I explained my idea about having a microphone that loops the sound picked up round the piece. Rosie then mentioned that a much easier way to do it was to have the camera picking up sound as well as image and have the TV playing this sound out loud if possible so that this constant loop of static along with sounds of the space will be picked up and reverb making it sound very strange indeed. However I would need to experiment with this too to see if it is possible. Rosie did mention small problem with this idea which is that the people who work in the gallery space probably won't want to hear my piece making white noise etc all day so maybe it would be worth just re-recording it and having a speaker somewhere so that it can be turned down or off if needs be. I thought about this however I really wanted this sound effect to be real live action of the space too so I will need to work on this and see what I can do.
Overall this Tutorial has helped me to develop my idea a lot more yet also keep it simple enough for me to produce. I feel like even though it has changed a lot it had changed for the better. I just need to go on to experiment with all these new techniques to see if it works now.
