Whilst Owen was in giving us a talk on his work he also offered us the chance to have one on one tutorials with him. I thought I would take this opportunity while I could to see what a practitioner such as himself who has also done this project back in his degree would think of my ideas.
I presented him my two ideas. Idea one was all about the idea of surveillance and using a circle of mirror to create an installation that would make you see yourself all around and then adding some projections and a sound collage to make a creepy atmosphere. Then their was idea two which was based on Pschogeography and the idea of people watching somewhere busy like a train station or cafe and then using a voice over to add story to these unknown people. (as explained in a previous post)
He understood both ideas however he edged himself more towards liking the Surveillance installation idea because he though that while the space was available it was better to push myself and use it to its full potential. We spoke about how I would install it and he suggested to keep it more simple to try and cut down the amount of mirror to as basic number as possible that would still create an effect. This made me think of maybe just using two and having the viewer stand in-between so that their reflection ends up constantly going back and forward. We then spoke about the sound and asked what I would do. I said I would keep it quiet and just have whispering and camera noises over the top. He pointed out that this may confuse the audience. We then talked about other possibilities such as maybe having a mic pick up a live feed of the space and have this keep being looped again and again and layered in a way that replicates the reflection of that person being repeated over and over. This suggestion of his made me much more confident in the piece because that seemed to pull the idea together a lot more. We then lastly spoke about what kind of projections I would use and I spoke about maybe images of cctv cameras. He suggested rather than keeping the images plain to maybe think of distorting them with coloured filters and glass as this distorts it. Finally on this idea he suggested to maybe look into a curation group called 'The Welcome Collection' as they have in the past use projectors and mirrors really effective with in spaces. This talk has really helped me to think about the actual logistics of this piece and has made me a lot more confident about it.
He liked my second idea but not as much because he enjoyed the concept but didn't see how the film would actually go anywhere and if their was much of a meaning to it. We spoke about how this idea could maybe work but I would have to experiment and try it possibly to see if their is anything more that comes to light during this creative process. A lot of the videos we watched by artist were always formed more in the creative process rather than being planned out before hand so I thought maybe this could be the case. I decided with him that maybe focusing more attention on the Surveillance idea would be good beginning to experiment and plan however it would be good to keep this idea on the back burner too by beginning to do small experiments that way if one doesn't work as well as the other I have more options. He suggested I look at a piece called Lift by Marc Isaacs and maybe some others of his work with are in documentary styles to give me some background research. However I realised I had already looked at this last year for my documentary piece but I thought it couldn't hurt to re-observe it from this different perspective.
Overall this tutorial was really helpful because it let me thicken out my ideas by talking about them with him and he made me realise which direction could have more potential.
