Idea 1 - Surveillance Circle:
I want to find the best way to install some kind of circle of mirrors so that when someone walks around the space in the middle they catch glimpses of themselves everywhere like you do on a security camera in shops some times. I was thinking of using live feed cameras for this but I feel like this wouldn't gain as much attention. With a mirror it is the idea that people can seen themselves and yet they are the ones watching themselves making it more real. To add a film/sound element to the piece and to make it more surveillance based I want to use projectors to reflect a lot of images in the mirror space as well. These images will link to cctv so they will be parts of cctv footage and images of the cameras themselves. I want to have flashes as well in this space to make a link back to cameras. Then for the sound collage I will keep it relatively silent because the creepy thing about watching cctv is that usually it never has sound. All I will have instead is whispering of people discussing things such as 'what are they doing?' and 'Look at them' to again embody the idea that cctv is watched by people. I will also have camera clicks and flashes etc to thicken it out. I feel like this idea could be really effective given the right materials and careful planning with in the gallery space etc. Somewhere quiet and darker would be better. I feel like it may also be a bit too complicated to put together just by myself so I may have to see if anyone would like to either help me with it or collaborate with me on it.
Idea 2 - People Watching:
Having always been a fan of people watching I wanted to think about the connections and networks between people and places even if it isn't necessarily real. I want to pick a very public place such as the tube or a cafe and I want to record people from one set location going about their day to day business. Once I have enough footage I want to look back and create a voice over telling a story about each of the people I see coming in and out of shot. This will make it slightly comedic possible but I want it to be all about how people move in that space but not in reality instead in my imagination what they could be doing. That also makes you aware of how many people you see every day that you don't know. I will then edit it in a way which makes it like a short loop documentary story that keeps going round and round. I haven't however with this idea thought too much of how I would install it. I feel like it is more of a one screen piece but I could try and develop it by finding a way to make it more than that.
Both these ideas are possibilities in my mind right now so I will start researching and experimenting with both and hopefully this will help me narrow down which one I will make and how. Also I have tutorials which will help me get some input into which may be the better option.
