Dance Video Group Meeting 1

Myself, Katherine and Sugini have decided to form a group together to work on a dance video expanding on the idea of phobias which we previously worked on in the workshops etc. We had a meeting via a group phone call on the 5th February in preparation for a tutorial we had booked the following day. Here is what we discussed:

Firstly we spoke about roles within the group and decided upon...
Katherine = Producer and Editor (possibility of helping as a Gaffa or Camera Operator on set if needed)
Sugini = Director of Photography/Cinematographer, Main Camera Operator and Lighting Planner (Gaffa)
Billie = Director (Gaffa when needed and happy to help with pre production and post production too)

We have also recruited ourselves a crew to help on the shoot days and this consists of...
Rufaro = Runner and general assistant
Chloe = Camera Assistant, Clapper and Runner
Nicole = Production Runner (in charge of timing etc)

This roles haven't been officially set in stone yet but we will stick to them and hopefully as long as everything runs smoothly not too much will need to change.

We also discussed the possibility of a profession hair and makeup artist as this may help the dancer feel more at ease and also will make the film look a lot more professional than if we did it ourselves like we have in the past.

We then spoke about the actually idea of the piece and we are all still very keen to have phobias represented by dancers but also the fear as well. Basically we want to show people without these phobias what it can feel like to have them and also why these things can be scary. We decided the base way to make this idea work was to not have too many phobias otherwise it may overcomplicate things. We like the idea of 3 phobias each one eating for roughly a minute. This is a simple structure but allows us to make adjustments as we go along. We then started thinking about what phobia we want to represent based on research and work we have done with dancers so far. We instantly all agreed upon Arachnophobia (Fear of Spiders) as this was very effective being represented by the Dancers in the workshop. We then spoke about some other possibilities but to help us have a range to choose from we did some research into the top 10 most common phobias. We decided we wanted common phobias as we like the idea of exploring something which is common yet so unspoken about. Here is the list of phobia we found...
1) Arachnophobia (Spiders)
2) Ophidiophobia (Snakes)
3) Acrophobia (Heights)
4) Agoraphobia  (Open or Crowded Spaces)
5) Cynophobia (Dogs)
6) Astraphobia (Thunder and Lighting)
7) Claustrophobia (Small Spaces)
8) Mysophobia (Germs)
9) Aerophobia (Flying/Planes)
10) Trypophobia (Holes in skin etc)

Out of this list we immediately picked an interest in Fear of Thunder/lighting and Claustrophobia however we couldn't fully decide on which ones we would pick till more research and experimenting had been done but now we had a list to choose from which was helpful.

We then spoke about how many dancers we would like to use and again we couldn't decide because we hadn't picked our phobias yet and we wanted to do some more visual research however we all were so far favouring the idea of two dancers working together. We knew it would depend on availability though and planned from 1 - 3 Dancers as a guide. We also all decided we wanted to work with contemporary dancers as we feel they are much more accessible to this conceptual topic we have chosen and we felt we would get more out of this style of dance as we all like it ad enjoy it.

We had a brainstorm about where to find the Dancers and I raised the idea of maybe not nessesaruily using professionals but maybe looking into finding people with phobias who are willing to dance for us and show us their interpretations so we could get a much realer sense of fear. The only problem was that this would lead the dance to be less stylised and clean which is the style we like. This led us to be torn between the style or reality. We decided this was something we needed to discuss in our tutorial to get an outsiders opinion. We also thought we could maybe just use people with these phobias or research but then form the dance with a professional that way we would have style but also reality.

We then moved on to look at locations and spoke about these potential places...
- Studio space would be a good as our idea is very conceptual and this is essentially a blank canvas however we are worried about the avalaibitly of the university studio and have therefore decided to think into alternatives as well.
- Abandoned buildings are a no go as they are far too overused in Dance video and have formed a cliche now.
- Village Halls are a good option as these are very open spaces which are recognisable but also quite blank. We want to maybe use it at night and light it in a way which makes it intimidating because it recognisable but not in a good way which then leads back to the fear and phobias. We want a large hall though so we have enough space for dancers and equipment. It also depends on the price and if we can get one cheap enough. We need to look into this more.
- Outside in the countryside is always a backup option however this would be effected by the weather especially at this time of year so maybe not good for the dancers.
- Maybe some scary urban location which again are recognisable but not in a good way such as alleyways, under bridges etc but we will need to look into this.
- Avoiding Churches as this will make a link to religion that we aren't wanting to push onto our piece or the audience.

I like the idea of props used with in the piece however we can't work on this till we choose a location which we haven't officially done as we need to look into a lot more first.

We have a lot to consider still but we are waiting for our tutorial and we also want to do more research into Phobias etc before we make these decisions but I feel like we have a good basis to work from now and I am very exciting to get into this project!
