360 Video Pre-Production Paperwork

Once we had an idea and a location in place we then went and worked between the two of us on all our pre-production paperwork in order to be able to film on Monday 20th March. Here is all the pre-production work me and Sugini did together:

360 Observational Wildlife Film Synopsis

We want to make a immersive but observational 360 Video based on the idea of nature and wildlife, in particular we really want to focuses on Butterflies and Birds (winged animals). Nature and animals is a particular interest of ours which we would like to incorporate into this piece. We were also most inspired by 360 Wildlife Video which we used as stimuli. We want to explore ways in which we can show these animals to the viewer in new and exciting perspective. This allows the audience to view the creatures up close and personal by bringing the action to them in this new way. We have chosen to focus on moving subjects so that when we edit the piece we can do so in a way which allows these animals to move round the camera in a natural way but also so they are directing the action for the viewer. We want to take the equipment to a Butterfly and Bird Park where we hope to set it up in lots of interesting locations where the animals will come close and interact with it. This will then give up lots of footage to edit in a very astatically pleasing and interesting way. The aim is to create a short but exciting piece which is visually pleasing and exciting to watch. We also want to incorporate a nature inspired music track which will play underneath the wildlife sounds captured by the camera. We will be selective in which sounds we incorporate but the music track will help to add atmosphere to our piece and enhance the visuals. The sound along with the visuals will hopefully create a short 360 video which takes the viewer on a journey of wildlife.

Outline Production:
We want to make a immersive but observational 360 Video based on the idea of nature and wildlife, in particular we really want to focuses on Butterflies and Birds (winged animals).

Target Audience:
This piece will appeal to anyone who has an interest in Wildlife and in particular Birds and Butterflies. We would expect it to appeal to a younger demographic based on the new 360 technology we are using. However this would also be an immersive way for anyone who is unable to go out and see this themselves to experience it.

Visual Elements:

  • Lighting-  We would like to use natural light within the sanctuary environment. If the weather is dull on the shooting day, we could move the Omni rig to an area within the sanctuary where there is better lighting. We will make the most out of the lighting we get on the day and position the rig in a particular space.

  • Camera Movement-  The Omni Rig will be stationary on either a lighting stand or Magic Arm as we want to get as higher quality shots as possible so that the attention is drawn to the detail of the wildlife. We want to try and position the Rig in the center of the space/action but we also want a variety of shots where by the camera is in exciting and unique places light low/high angles etc. Due to the nature of the 360 technology, there is no need for us to rotate the rig around the subjects and constantly reposition the camera’s direction as everything will be captured in the 360 view. Instead we will focus on making sure the visuals/environment around the camera are as interesting as possible.

  • Editing- We will review our footage once stitched together and be selective in our editing so we can incorporate the most exciting and interesting action in the piece in a way which directs the viewers attention to the wildlife. We want to keep it astatically pleasing and not focus upon a narrative but instead upon creating poetic visuals. We will use stitching techniques but also normal film editing techniques to do this such as colour grading. This will enhance the visuals and the colours for the viewer.

  • Setting- We are filming on location hopefully in a Butterfly and Bird Park. This will give us lots of creatures and nature to focus on which is guaranteed to be there. However if we anything goes wrong we also have a backup location which is Richmond Park where deer’s roam freely and there is a lot of surrounding wildlife and gardens to get some nice visuals. It would still be the same visuals and theme just slightly different subjects in a different location.

Audio Elements:
  • Sound – We would like to keep the natural sounds in the environment, this will be recorded straight onto the GoPro cameras. If we find some of the sounds within the footages aren’t good, we will be selective of what we choose to use. To improve the viewer’s experience whilst viewing the video, we could enhance the sound by adding a nature inspired music piece over the sounds recorded by the GoPros. This would hopefully give it a more poetic feel and add more emotion to the piece.

Requirements and Resources:
Omni Rig with 6 Go Pros already installed, Go Pro Smart Remote, 6 Go Pro USB Cables, 6 Micro SD Cards, 6 USB Mini SD Card Readers, 7 Port USB Hub, Spiggot, Converter, Hex Key, Microfiber Cloth, Go Pro Tweezers, Portable Charging Kit, Light Stand, Magic Arm

Constraints and Contingency:
The biggest constraint is that we only have 18minuetes of battery life with the Omni Rig in order to capture the footage we want. We will look into taking a portable charging kit with us so that we will be able to charge it up on location if needs be. We also need to be wary of the fact that the Wildlife we are filming may not approach the camera as much as we would like. However this is why we have chosen to film early because we want to have time to go out and capture more if we need to. We have chosen our main location to be inside the butterfly and bird houses so that weather isn’t an issue however if we do go with our backup location of Richmond Park this is outdoors and we must keep an eye on the weather in order to film. We have a small budget between us which is to pay for entry into location and travel to get there however we are keeping this as low as possible.

Schedule

All this paperwork has now put us in a very strong position to be able to film there on Monday 20th and we have been singed off to do so.

We have also managed to gain verbal location permission from Earnley Butterfly Park because they were unresponsive to our emails we instead managed to get through to them via phone so they have verbally given permission. However we will be taking a location permission form/contract down with us when we go on Monday to get signed just as final confirmation before we begin filming. I am very confident and excited about getting to film this!
