Dance Video First Hand Phobia Research

In order to get some first hand research about Phobias I created a Survey all about Phobias and got people to anonymously fill it in. It had helped give us some really influential and motivating language for the Dancer which helps express peoples thoughts and feelings behind Phobias. Here is the basic blank Survey I made:

Phobia Research Survey

Age:
Phobia:

Do you know where this phobia stems from?

What is it about this phobia which particularly scares you?

How has this phobia affected you and your life?

When you are faced with your phobia how do you feel?

How do you react to your Phobia?

Here are the responses I then got from giving this Survey out to people who had told me they suffered from a Phobia:

Phobia Research Survey

Age: 45
Phobia: Fear of Deep Water (Aquaphobia)

Do you know where this phobia stems from?
No, never liked deep water.

What is it about this phobia which particularly scares you?
I don’t like how you can’t see the bottom and you don’t know what could be in it. Also I could drown.

How has this phobia affected you and your life?
I only swim a little bit but I avoid going deep into the sea.

When you are faced with your phobia how do you feel?
I feel very scared and nervous. I freeze up and can’t move properly which then makes me panic in the water even more.

How do you react to your Phobia?
I try and swim back to safe shallow waters which is very difficult because of how much I am panicking.

Phobia Research Survey

Age: 20
Phobia: Fear of Needles (Trypanophobia)

Do you know where this phobia stems from?
I have always had a fear of them as long as I can remember, I had a lot of medical procedures as a child so it may have come from there.

What is it about this phobia which particularly scares you?
It is the idea of my skin being broken and an object entering into my body which shouldn’t be there. It isn’t just medical needles; it is all sharp objects similar to this.

How has this phobia affected you and your life?
It makes routine medical procedure like jabs a nightmare as I still have to be forced into it by my parents and take otherwise I won’t go through with it. It also means I am fearful of getting ill because I want to avoid any situation where I need an injection or blood test.

When you are faced with your phobia how do you feel?
I feel very short of breath and display symptoms of anxiety such as fidgeting and tensing all my muscles. I can’t think straight and all I want to do is crawl into a ball.

How do you react to your Phobia?
I avoid it but if I am forced to have an injection I have to look away and I freeze up and cant move.

Phobia: Phobia of Spiders (Arachnophobia)

Do you know where this phobia stems from?
My mum has this same phobia so seeing her react how she does has brought me up to have the same reactions and phobia.

What is it about this phobia which particularly scares you?
I have an inbuilt instinct which takes over. I especially don’t like hairy spiders or spiders which move frantically and surprise me. Size and speed are a big thing which affects me.

How has this phobia affected you and your life?
I always have to try and get rid of them if I see them anywhere in my house otherwise I cannot relax and will be on edge if I know there is one in the room.

When you are faced with your phobia how do you feel?
The hairs on the back of my neck go up, my heartbeat quickens and I panic which gives me an adrenaline rush. It’s essentially a flight or fight response.

How do you react to your Phobia?
I move away from the spider instantly especially if it’s on me I will frantically try and get them off. If I can pluck up the courage I will try and get rid of it, if not I have to leave it for someone else to deal with and move out the room.

I cover my eyes if I’m in an aquarium and I change the channel if they come on TV or leave the room.

We have also circulated this survey online to people and have got more responses back that way as well which we will also use to help us motivate our dancer with effective language and it all gives us more visuals on how phobias effect people.
