Resolution 1, Camera Workshop - Exploring the Range

Today was an initial camera workshop to begin exploring the main cameras available to us for this project. I attended so that I could explore the potential behind eat camera and therefore make sure I picked the best one for my project. Here are the main points we looked at:

The main cameras I looked into were the:
GH4 - DSLR styled camera which is the smallest out of them all
Canon 305 - This hasn't got the best quality but is simplistic in use and smaller/lighter than other film cameras
C300 - This camera is a DSLR styled camera but made purely for filming purposes. It comes rigged up which makes it quite large however this can be de-rigged for handheld smaller stuff.
Black Magic URSA - This si the biggest out them all and is a high quality hight tech film camera.

There should be Matte Boxes available for all the camera - This helps control the amount of light getting into the sensor by adding a glass filter giving you more control. Its capable of making more dramatic effects. We have 3, 6 and 9 ND's. (Neutral Densities)

Using the Samurai Blade on any of these cameras makes them capable of recording in higher quality (10 Bit) except the Ursa which already records internally in this high quality.

The C300 and the Ursa require a 3 person camera crew minimum which I luckily have so these are viable options for my piece.

The Ursa and the GH4 are the better camera's to use for filming higher frame rates for slow motion. The C300 unfortunately can't record a very high frame rate and therefore probably isn't a good choice for me.

The Ursa can't be used on a Glide Cam and only on a large tripod because of its size however I feel like most my shots are still anyway so this works for me. However if I did want to use a glide cam or other mounting accessories The C300 and GH4 will suit it better.

Whichever camera I use I shouldn't ever use any camera pre-sets which manipulate the image because essentially I want the purest recordings to open up as many possibilities as I can in post.

The colour Space we use is REC 709 so again regardless of the camera I need to make sure I set it up for this.

For my piece I want to have an much quality and detail as possible so 10 bit or 12 bit will be best. 10 bit is more for drama but 12 bit is advised for heavy VFX or green screen work so I may want to use 12 Bit if possible for my manipulation.

I want to use LOG when filming on my camera of choice as this will maximise the dynamic range of highlight and lowlights I just need to remember to De-Log these in post so I can see all these ranges in my piece.

I want as high a quality as possible to show all the macro detail and create drama so 4K would work for this. However it has been pointed out that 4K is very complicated as the files are so large and this will create a nightmare with memory space and editing. However Ultra High Definition (UHD) is TV's version of 4K which is slightly smaller in file size but still good quality so this is probably a better option so I need a camera that can do this which I believe is the Ursa.

The Ursa is also better for high frame rates at high quality however whenever filming in a very high frame rate you will loose some resolution but this is cause of the amount of information the camera is trying to capture.

I was leaning towards the Ursa so decided to have a play with it in the class to see the quality it produced for myself and to also see if it was possible to capture close up shots too. Here are some pictures I took of the experiments we did and I am very happy with its capabilities:

After everything that we learnt and discussed during this workshop and I then went and had a discussion with my DOP Sugini and my camera crew Umor & Ethan. They agreed with me that at the moment the Black Magic Ursa sounds best for what I want in terms of quality and high frame rate and its also useable for me as I have a big enough crew and will be shooting mainly and majority within the studio with the camera on a tripod. I just need to now get myself inducted on this with the rest of my crew next week so we can begin experimenting properly with it.
