Resolution 1, Meeting with my Director of Photography and my Storyboard Artist (04.10.17)

As I have already said I have now managed to put a crew together for my piece so that I can begin working with the relevant people to make my piece happen. I knew my visuals were the least developed part of my entire idea so I had a meeting with my DOP Sugini to discuss these and see what suggestions she had and to hopefully start setting them in stone ready to begin work.

We went through all the visual work I had put together so far and these are the main points we then discussed together:

We spoke a lot about the technology needed to film the images I wanted in a high quality to create the effect I wanted. We began thinking into cameras and we will seek help at a camera workshop this week to check we are using something relevant for what we want. We are thinking so far along the lines of a GH4 because then we can use still photography lenses to gain the effect we want like shallow depth of field and macro etc. We also like the idea of recording in very high quality so feel like the GH4 allows this as it has 4K capabilities which would give the visuals the power I want them to have.

A lot of my visuals won't be played in normal time as I feel like slow motion and also some in fast motion will give it the strong but experimental effect that I am after again keeping it powerful. Therefore we discussed the frame rates we need to use when filming and for each visual/shot we will probably do several takes, one at normal frame rate and then others with larger frame rates allowing us to get the best effect and manipulate it in post as I desired.

We were discussing a lot of the water effects that I have spoken about in terms of visuals and we feel the best way to do this is within a glass fish tank which we can then put the camera rite up to the edge of. We however have realised we will need to try out the fish tank before the actual shoot because I need to know if it is deep enough for the effects in the water I want especially in terms of dropping the objects with in it and capturing all the detail that appears while it sinks.

The shot with the lines on the palm of the hand is another one I need to think into because hopefully the camera will capture enough detail within this image especially with macro lens but we did briefly think about putting ink onto the hands to make these minor details of the hands and palms stand out even more when we are filming them but Im no sure which way will look better and will be more powerful so again I need to think into this and maybe trial it.

Another question that is looming over us a bit is what colour background will be used. When thinking into the visuals myself I really liked the idea of a neutral plain white background which is almost like a blank canvas to decorate with my evocative emotional symbolism. However Sugini has pointed out that some of the visuals might not stand out very bold if against a white background and also white may wash everything out too much and make exposure harder to control. Taking this on board I then thought about black but am worried I would then have much of the same problems but the opposite way round. This has left me thinking maybe grey would be most effective giving all visuals an equal chance to stand out but also this then is more of a neutral colour to make it a neutral starting point still like I have spoken about. This might however need to be tested in some kind of pre-light to check that it works for everything. All I know for certain on this is that I want the same coloured background through out the whole piece as I feel like it will be too jarring on my imagery to change it at any point between shots as I want a flow to it.

Talking more into the water shots again Sugini made a really helpful suggestion about using an air pump placed in the water to cause some really elegant air bubbles and disruption which we can capture hopefully very beautifully. She also suggested the use of powder (paint powder etc) to add into some of the other shots like when the feather is floating etc which would add some texture to these pieces which I do like the idea of.

Lastly we move on to talk about the lighting which we feel needs to be bright to illuminate all the detail in every shot but we also need to be careful of over exposure eliminating detail. Sugini feels very confident in being able to do this as she works doing product photography on a small scale like this project is so she has experience at lighting it to the rite degree but again a pre-light will take place to try and test this.

Overall this meeting was really helpful as me and Sugini are bale to make sure we were on the same page and also make sure we are confident enough in these visuals and will be able to find the best ways to capture these effectively.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After that meeting with my DOP I was then confident enough to meet with Chloe who offered to be my storyboard artist. I ran her through my list of visuals and also gave her all the information me and Sugini had discussed so that she knew what images she needed to draw. I however wasn't sure of any order of these visuals yet so I told her just to provide me with the images and I could rearrange them at a later date. She estimated a week to finish all of these which I was more than happy with as this was reasonable for the 20 to 30 frames I had asked for.

Again I am very confident that Chloe's artistic eye will be able to draw my visuals so that I then have a visual plan and reference for the processes and work to follow.
