I have arranged to have a meeting tomorrow morning with my DOP Sugini to talk about my visual ideas as these are what is currently weakest. Hopefully together we can plan these out a lot more thoroughly and realistically. I am then meeting with Chloe the Storyboard Artist straight afterwards to then discuss the visuals with her so that she is briefed and ready to begin helping out with the making of the storyboard.
In preparation for both these meetings I have thought about all the visuals I spoke about in my presentation, took inspiration from and brainstormed and I wrote them down in an organised way so I can articulate them tomorrow. Here is the list:
- Ink in water spreading and un-spreading, colours represent different family members and the way the situation spreads/escalates. Created in a glass fishtank in the studio.
- Symbolic Objects being dropped/splashing into the water tank. The main object that comes to mind is an apple with a bite from it to link it into sins and the commandments from the bible. It splashing into the water and sinking shows the disruption it caused.
- The tank should be filmed being filled up at the beginning with water and un-filling at the end to show how it is only one part of life.
- abstracted face under water creating obstruction in the water from trying to breath. These faces could be mine and my brothers or even the whole families. I want them to be really abstracted so you can't see the identity of the person though. This is to tie the use of water into the feeling of drowning within this situation but also the idea that it cleans and washes away. I can film this in a bathtub big enough with location lighting.
- Macros shots of palms of hands especially tracking the lines on the palms as these are said to show how many children you will have and how long you will live etc in palm reading. Studio with lighting.
- Macro shots of other symbolic bodily features which won't identify us though. Such as Ring finger, pores on face, smile lines, mouth, hands held together.
- Hand Gestures close up in slow motion going to hold hands and then unfolding. Track back at the end to reveal both hands belong to the same person. (still don't show face though.) Studio with lighting, make sure model is wearing same clouded t-shirt as background colour I'm using.
- Paint (ink maybe) dripping down glass separating off into different paths as it does so. Use the empty tank and vaseline to make this happen in studio with lighting. This is show how the family separated but I want to show all the paint meeting again at the bottom to show we are still together in the end though and always will be.
- When the fish tank is filled with water I want to create waves and pattern in the water and film this in macro to show the disturbances within our life which can seem graceful because the outcome wasn't all negative.
- Ring spinning on a counter continually through the piece then finally falls down at the end (could reverse this through out so its left standing at the end). Most obvious symbol linking to marriage and it falls to show that relationships and marriage are very different when me and my brother think about it now. Filmed in studio against background.
- A symbolic plant (Sunflowers and yellow flowers remind me of my childhood) growing from a seed upwards and then dying in a time-lapse. I will need to film this at home everyday over time. I then want to reverse this for my piece so that it shows how as much as it hurt at the time we still came back from it and we are still us.
- Yellow Plant Petals floating through the water in the tank. This is to show how parts of us are still changed from this situation but also represents us floating again after everything.
- Feathers and dust floating through the air in slow-motion (potential to reverse this). This is to represent the freedom my parents wanted but also reflects the maturity me and my brothers had gained.
- Balloons popping in slow motion filmed in studio. This is represent the disruption but also the loss of childhood in a way.
- Film glass gets hit/smashed but continues to crack. I want the camera to macro track the cracks to show the fragmentation of everything afterwards.
These are all the visuals I have got so far but after tomorrow I may be able to add to this list but also refine it.
