Virtual Reality
'the computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors.' Dictionary
This definition doesn't describe what exactly what I am making because I am not using this kind of special technology however I am trying to put them into my emotional journey which is a real in itself. I wanted to map out the history of VR to see how it developed as it is such a complex idea. Here is a timeline I found while reading about VR and I found it to be particularly insightful:
There are a few things which I found most interesting about this timeline and they were how it says that VR is thought to be traced back to artist in the 1860's painting 3D panoramic murals. I like how its origins are then connected into art and I like before any kind of film or digital technology was made artist were still invested in the idea of trying to create fake reality and I feel like this is connected to art as a whole in a big way because a lot of the time you want your artwork to emote someone and show them something and the most real way of doing this would be to make them experience it so VR is a really powerful tool to letting and making people experience certain things for certain reasons.
Another thing which makes me wonder is why films have always been like almost obsessive over this idea of VR in films like Tron and The Matrix and again I feel like it is to do with the idea of technology being able to transport you to somewhere else the same way that this is what the film is trying to do to the viewers because if a film is really good you feel really immersed within the story while watching it. I feel like the films are kind of asking the ultimate question of weather it is good or bad that we can now use technology to make a new world for ourselves. Whats even more interesting is that the VR witnessed in this films isn't even possible within the real world yet so the film itself is questioning the future.
Lastly it is really interesting to find out about what is going on with VR technology more currently especially with the Oculus as I remember when these headsets around 2012 did suddenly appear and what I use to really like is how they could be used for the purposes of creating a new type of art. I saw it being used for an art purpose recently when on social media videos kept coming up talking about mental health and art. Here is one of the videos I managed to find again:
I really like how this use of VR is actually now being given to people who are suffering from mental health problems so that they are able to express themselves like you see this girl doing in the video. She is able to create a whole space/environment using this technology that will demonstrate what she thinks, feels, sees and hears which with her kind of condition as she has said has always been hard for her. I love the fact that this is a way of digitally painting as well which in itself is like a new type of art or a new medium to use to create art which has been enable by VR. This part of my research has in particular really helped me think about the ways in which I can and will express my emotions that I felt and am still feeling now in terms of my parents divorce and the ways these will be represented. It also made me think about how this can really be a release for myself but also hopefully for the viewers who will be feel immersed in the emotions themselves and relate to this. Even though I am not creating a VR piece per say the theory behind it and the way it works is really helpful to myself and my piece.
Experiential Design
I had never really thought about his term before and as much as I could guess I don't know what it officially means so I found a definition...
'Experience design (XD) is the practice of designingproducts, processes, services, events, omnichannel journeys, and environments with a focus placed on the quality of the user experience and culturally relevant solutions.' - wikipedia
This definition to me means that experiential design can be applied to any form of art and means that the users experience should always be at the forefront of this. So the art is made to involve and make the viewers time better however does better necessarily mean happy? I was confused so I went and read an article on Adobes website and this are the main points I found out:
- They say that experiential design can be see in a number of normal everyday places and that it tends to be 'more engaging than traditional media, experiential design is changing the way we experience products, places, and environments.' This is really interesting because this is telling me that its actually less about the final product itself and instead more about the experience they have with it. This is really interesting because I have been saying I will make two versions of my final piece, one that is one screen and another that is installed in a way that I want to be experiential so I am aiming for an experiential design. I don't want viewers to merely watch, I want them to feel as well as think and feel involved.
- I feel like experiential designs attract and work bittern audiences when the experience is very different or new. This was said by Jason White the executive producer at Leviathan. He said 'Experiential design is the most effective way to intrigue audiences, because people flock to new experiences in unexpected places.' This means that I my piece will hopefully attach more people if it is experiential but in a unique way. I need to start thinking more into how to do this but at the moment I know I am already filling a gap within my subject matter by tackling divorce in such an abstract and experimental manor. Now I need to make sure I follow this through with the installation.
- I found a really exciting video by Leviathan which shows and demonstrates experiential designs that they have made and created obviously being very successful in their field:
What I loved but also found really interesting in this video was the sections were it should them creating a experience at venues etc with the use of light mapping and projection mapping. This is the idea which I originally came up with and started looking into as a means in which I could use to display and install my piece. I want to have the video displayed in an exciting way where the images move around and amongst the space which would require more than likely projection mapping. If I can learn these skills then I have a much better advantage at being able to install my piece in a way which will make it experiential to the viewer.
- Experiential Design Installations can be achieved in seven different ways which I looked up online and these are what it says on the Adobe website:
Looking into these and thinking about my piece I believe that my approach is based on the top two ways of achieving experiential design. It will be a video installation with a lot of visually imagery symbolic to my theme and I want to shoot it in really high quality (UHD). I also then want to try video mapping as it is called here because I want the video to explore the space I project it into being split into different layers and areas exploring my theme. This one is much harder but if I can pull it off I believe that based on what I have read I can achieve an experiential design.
