Experimental Film - Planning and Developing my Shoe Story

For my shoe story I chose to base it on a pair of high heels going for a night out. I knew that I wanted my story to be quite fun but also quite gruesome as well showing the downfalls of a bad night out through the shoes. I began by making a quick mind map on things that could possible happen:

I then took this brain storm and decided to write a story which I then made into a shot list. Here is my synopsis:

Night Out Shoes Synopsis:

I will follow and recreate the memories of a girl on a night out. The shoes that will be focused on will be a pair of high heels which will be of a younger style because my character is 18 years of age. I will begin with her getting ready showing the shoes in perfect condition and then she will go out to a club where she will get drunk and dance with friends. I will represent this by having drinks spilt on the shoes and cigarettes put out by her shoes. Also I will show her shoes dancing in and amongst other shoes and layer this with images of the club. The night will then take a turn for the worst when she becomes too drunk and throws up on her own shoes and get emotional stumbling around. She then recovers and leaves the club getting into a taxi. She then falls out a taxi and arrives at a house party where she then dances on the table and end ups up drinking and smoking more which will be shown in the same way as before but more and worse. She also gets involved with a boy and we see her legs and the shoes wrapped around him. She then snaps her heel through falling over and ends up taking them off and we just see them in her hand whilst she dances. We then see her throwing up a bit more and then she finds her shoes and walks home with her boy. We then end with her abandoning the shoes on her walk home and them being left by themselves in the middle of the road.

Here is my shot list for the night out:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that I had my own story planned out we could start focusing on the shots we needed to get in the studio. We wanted to re-enact memories from the story but just to the shoes. We managed to get the studio booked for our first 4 days of filming so got a move on with creating myself a shit list for my studio shots. Here it is:

Studio Shots:
I want all the studio shots to be mid shot and very plain and simple so you can just focus on the actions going on
- Shoes elegantly positioned on white background like something out of a fashion magazine with nice bright lighting. Pan around shoes to introduce them.
- Same shot as above but this time with bottles surrounding the shoes to represent alcohol
- Alcohol being poured out the bottle onto the shoes to show drinks being spilt.
-Drinks being more vigorously throw at the shoes to show how drunk she is becoming
- Plastic empty cups being dropped and thrown at shoes
- Lifting up shoes to find cigarette buts stuck to the bottom of them
- Shoes full of cigarette buts
- Sick on shoes represented by pouring vegetable soup on them/around them
- Have an arm covered in sick (soup) picking up and holding shoes
- Have condoms draped and thrown at the shoes
- Hands snapping heels off shoes
- Throwing pieces of the broken shoes down

I also then made a treatment on behalf of the entire group. Here it is:

Programme title: (Untitled Currently) Memories and Reflections Shoe Project

Duration: 5:00 minuets

Genre: Experimental/Abstract Film

Production Staff: Billie Williams, Mary Novoslova, Katherine Whetton, Umor Hussain

Production Date: 09/03/16 till 18/03/16 for filming, 18/03/16 till 24/04/16 to edit
Hand In Date: 25/04/16

Outline Production:
Our piece is an abstract and experimental representation of 4 different stories about 4 different people represented through shoes only. We want to show how peoples objects such as shoes can show who they are and represent them and their memories. We will do this through locational shots showing their shoes through out there stories blended with studio shots of us re-creating what happened to their shoes in a more exaggerated way almost like memories.

Target Audience:
Each different pair of shoes represents a different kind of person of a different age so in that respect it could appeal to a very broad market of teens through to older adults.
However due to the abstract way we will make and edit it will target a younger adult and teen market primarily.

Visual Elements:
  • Lighting-
We will use bright 3 key lighting in the studio to represent the memories.
On location we will use natural lighting of the location however for indoor shots we may need one extra light to make the shoes more visible but we will avoid this where possible because we need to keep filming as basic as possible because most loctions will be busy public places.
  • Camera Movement-
We will use very basic still camera shots in the studio to make the memories as straight to the point as possible
On location we will do a lot of tracking shots to follow the shoes on their journeys and also we will use primarily low angles as we are only showing the shoes.
We need shots to layer over some images of the location so this will avoid having any faces in and will just represent the atmosphere of the place.
  • Editing-
Editing will be very important because we want to cut from story to story having seamlessly making the actions blend from one story to another. We will have a couple of faster paced stories such as the night out and the skateboarder and then we will have some slower paced stories such as a business trip and a first date so we need to edit them in a way which evens itself out and keeps the piece flowing.
Also in editing we need to create sound collages and soundscapes which represent the mood of the place and the atmosphere.
  • Setting-
There are four main locations relating to each story and then the studio shots too so we need to make these flow however there will be smaller less important location too which will blend in to the stories. Skate park, Night Club, Public Transport and a Restaurant/café.
  • Actors-
Each group member has their own story to focus on so will be responsible for providing their own actors capable of doing what is needed of them. In the studio we will just use ourselves for the memories to save time.

  • Props-
The main prop we need is two pairs of shoes for each story. One pair to be used on location and another pair which will be wrecked in the studio through the re-enactment of the memories.
  • Costume-
Costumes will need to match the story we are telling so for the night out the character will be dressed up. For the skate park story they will be in casual teen wear such as jeans. For the business trip they will be in smart clothing and for the date they will be dressed up smart casual.

Audio Elements:
  • Soundtrack-
We want to avoid using music and instead create a soundscape from shoe sounds, natural sounds of the place and recreated folly sounds which will show the atmosphere of the location and story.
  • Effects-
Some sounds might be hard to record in the location such as night clubs and skateboarding so we will recreate folly sounds we want for our soundscape in the sound studio.
  • Music-
We don’t want music if we can avoid it unless it is part of the atmosphere. Instead we want abstract soundscapes to create a mood and atmosphere for the location and story.

Requirements and Resources:
Studio Space,  Red Head Lighting, Cannon XF 350 Camera with external Microphone and Tripod, DSLR and External Microphone, Go Pro Camera and attachment clips, Sound Studio.

Constraints and Contingency:
We have a very limited schedule of a week to film and we have a lot of different locations to film which means we need a lot of location permissions and risk assessments. We also have a very limited budget as students.

Now that the basic paperwork I was assigned is done I can go on to planning my shoot in more detail. Myself and the other members of the group were having very little success finding a bar or night club that we could all get to that would let us film. Because I was running out of time and we were due to start filming soon I re-adapted the idea. I changed it from being in a club or bar to a house party instead. This location would be a lot more accessible to us and allow us to be much more in control. I planned to do it at my friends house because it is much bigger than my own and therefore gives me much more opportunity for better shots. I got written permission from the lead tenant which is in the production paperwork pack. I also organised 6 of my friends to be actors in it for me so I got each of them to sign a permissions form as well which again is now in our production paperwork pack. I also had to re-update the shot list to suit the new location so here is it:

House Party Shot List
Getting ready:
-Cupboard door opens and hand reaches in and picks out the high heels (close up)
-Show shoes being slipped onto feet (close up, low angle)

-mid/long shot of girl walking into shot, picking up handbag and then leaving shot
-Side low angle shot of girl opening front door and stepping out
-low angle shot looking out front door as girl walks away

Party:
-low angle long shot of girl arriving at front door of party, the door is opened and the girl steps in to be greeted by friends
-Close up shots of friends all greeting each other
-tracking shot from behind as girl is led into the main room where the party if happening
-variety of shots of girl dancing by herself and also with others
-cup gets dropped onto the shoes/floor as the girl is dancing (high angle looking down)
-high angle shot of everyones hands in the air whilst dancing
-Close up of empty bottles all across the table
-Close up Party lights going in and out of focus
-Close up low angle of girls foot/shoe stubbing out a cigarette
-Feet/legs sat on floor outside (tilted angle)
-Over the shoulder shot outside sitting on ground, girls head leads forward suddenly as if about to be sick
-In toilet low angle looking up at the back of the girl as she is sick
-Close up of toilet flushing
-close up of drink being poured into a cup
-high angle looking down at girls feet as she steps up on table as if to dance
-360 tracking shot around the table as girl dances
-Close up of males feet dancing with the girl
-shot from behind the male as the female has her legs wrapped around his back, camera tracks past as things get intimate
-Shot of girl dancing bare foot this time holding shoes in her hand
-Low angle floor level shot of male and the girls feet leaving the party together
-track alongside the girl as she is being carried home with shoes in hand being swung around drunkenly
-POV looking up at the streetlights and stars
-behind the girl and male whilst they continue down the street together but she throws/drops her shoes down and keeps going without them
-POV from where the abandoned shoes are left watching the girl and male walk away out of shot
-Basic shot looking down at the shoes lying in the street
