Auditions Evening 1 for Studio Shoot

Our first evening of Auditions for the studio shoot took place on Monday 14th November from 4pm till 8pm however we only had 4 booked in for this evening so we knew it wouldn't take that long. Katherine (Producer) had scheduled each actor for a 20 minute slot in which we had a series of exercises planned for them to do that would help inform us of how suited they would be for our piece.

The exercises that they were asked to do were:

Stage 1 - We put a mirror in front of them and asked them to improvise getting ready/prepping ones self for a important event that means something to them. This was to just get them into the idea of the piece.

Stage 2 - We asked them to do that same as stage one but this time we took away the mirror and instead there was just a white line on the floor which we told them represented where the mirror would be. This was to see how well they could act as if there was a mirror there.

Stage 3 - We then said carry on doing the same as before but this time you feel as though something or someone is watching you from an unspecific location. This was to test how well they could show emotion with the mirror.

Stage 4 - We then got them to do the same as the last stage but this time they realise that the person watching them is their own reflection. This was to test how they would show an audience the pivotal realisation that the reflection isn't really them.

Stage 5 - We told them to do the same as before but this time after they realise that it is the reflection watching them and its no longer there true self the reflection begins to move out the mirror into there space and they have to find ways to put it back. This was to see how they played the role and help us work out if they had the right movement for the piece. We also had music on as an aid for them to get into a lot more.

Stage 6 - This was a simply copycat exercise were we asked them to copy exactly everything Katherine went up and did as if they were a reflection. This was to show us how well they could perceive someone else moments and do it themselves.

As well as these tasks we obviously planned to ask them questions first about there acting and dancing experience to get a general idea of there background and if they have done anything else like this in the past to know how suited they would be.

Katherine also provided us with sheets to fill out based on what we observed from each Actor to help inform the group and make a decision about it.

We had our first audition of Monday night booked in for 5:25 so we made sure we had run through everything between ourselves and had everything set up ready for when they arrived. However unfortunately 10 minutes after our the first audition was meant to start they finally contacted us and said they were too ill to come in which was very frustrating at the time but we moved on and got ready for the next audition which was a girl called Gabby from the Acting Course at the University.

Here are the notes I took from her audition:

I really liked her because she was very confident and also wasn't shy to ask questions. She also seemed to really like the idea of our piece and spoke to us a lot about it which was very helpful for us and showed us she cared. She has a lot of previous experience and she brought something new to the character which would work really well and I had never thought of before. She plays a very childish persona and I feel this would suit her to the Id role really well.

Unfortunately Gabby was the only one who showed up to her audition as the third one we had booked had to change it to Tuesday instead which we were happy to do as it wasn't her fault. Then the 4th Audition we had lined up never showed up and we were unable to get hold of her so we had to leave it.

Im glad the audition we did do went so well its just a shame that we weren't able to do any more due to problems with the actors etc. However we knew we now had at least 1 booked in for Tuesday which was good.
