After all parting our separate ways and having an extra day to come up with some research and a full concede idea (which I did, Refer to previous post) we met again as a group to share everything we looked into and to ultimately pick an idea. Here are the main points and notes I took from the meeting:
We began by discussing what everyone had researched and about half the group had also looked into mental illness the same as myself and got the same conclusions I did about how Schizophrenia could actually be a really interesting focus for our piece. The other half were more focused on self image with their research and identity.
We then went round the group and gave everyone the chance to share what they had looked at if anything and say their ideas. I said mine first which seemed to go down well (refer to prevues post) The other ideas were:
Sugini - Sugini again talked about the same idea she had mentioned in the last meeting where she thought we should focus on using mirrors to reflect multi versions of one character with in these mirrors. Each reflection would be a different part of who they were so this could work well with the theme of either identity or mental health.
Adi - Adi looked into mental health and said that he feels like if we did make a piece based on a specific illness like schizophrenia that he could make a really interesting soundscape to go along with it and help show this illness through techniques such as distorted noises.
Ollie - Ollie was happy to go with the idea of schizophrenia and said that if we did base it upon this he could conduct some first hand research for us by interviewing someone he knows suffers from this illness.
Jay - Jay again focused his attention on the set design as this is his role. He has agreed a set she with the set designer from the other group who has to share the space with us. They are thinking long sides leading to a wall at the end of the space which you are looking down towards. Rather than just a flat wall at the end he wants a what looks like half a hexagonal prism from above. So the space will use 5 walls. He is looking into a muted pallets which will work with most the ideas so grays, blacks and whites. If we do make the space into someones head space he wants to take things which could be from a real bedroom to represent the person but then break them up and mess them about in the space. He also said if we need to he can create a good side and a bad side to show the good and bad mental states and feelings people have about their identity.
Nicole and Chloe - Both of them shared what they had spoken about which is that they think I density would work a lot better than Mental Illness so that it isn't too complicated. Instead do it about the hidden characteristics that people have the they try and hide. They used the film 'Black Swan' as a reference for their concept.
Ethan - He spoke about visuals DOP and is still trying to decide how experimental we want to go with them. As a group we agreed do the basic shots but all go as experimental and abstract as possible because essentially we think tis will suit our themes better.
Maisie - She also spoke about the film 'Black Swan' and wanted the mirror in the set to be used to show how the person portrays themselves and then to show how that person actually is in reality. She also looked into the way mirror can be used to show insecurities like in the film 'Snow White' whee the witch constantly asks her mirror for help. Maisie also spoke about some really interesting visuals we could create with the camera based around the mirror like some from the POV of the mirror.
Katherine - Katherine mentioned the possible use of a Reflective one sided mirror if we could source one. This means we could build a mirror into the set but still be able to film through it from the behind side of it to get some really nice shots.
Logan - Logan looked into Schizophrenia but then also Multiple Personality Disorder and how we could represent this with two actors.One character wakes up with in their head space seeing different versions of themselves. This character is stuck in their own head space while the other actor is trying to wake them up.
We after hearing everyones ideas and discussing them knew we needed to work out which idea we were actually going to go ahead with. We did a vote about weather people wanted to focus only on mental illness like schizophrenia or weather people wanted to look at identity in a general manor and more personality wise. The vote swayed more towards identity and so we began formulating our idea based on this:
We still knew we wanted to keep a underlined hint at mental illness and metal health but without being too forward with it. We then started talking about the ideas of how people see themselves to how others see them and then other personalty traits people have such as inner animal instincts. This sparked us to discuss the Freudian theory of the Id, Ego and Super Ego. The Id is the raw animals instincts one has, the super ego is the part of them that strives to outdo and over perform to impress people and then the ego is the middle ground which chooses which way you will act upon these. We talked about this for a while and then came to the idea of having two actors. One represents the super Ego and the other the Id and their is a mirror between the two of them which they use to reflect one another but then the Id begins to lash out and play up like an animal and the Super Ego is trying to control it. In a sense the mirror is the ego because its all about comparing what you really feel and think against what you want to feel and think. The tension builds between he two sides of this character and through the mirror they begin fighting and eventually one of them will win. Someone referred the music Videos by musician Sia and the movements that are portrayed in them could be the way the actors begin to move in our piece in a very over dramatized way. Its all about the way people trying hide their true selves and how some people experience this very differently We are essentially depicting a mental struggle.
Now that the idea has been developed and chosen and everyone is happy myself and Logan have been set the task of writing up a Synopsis and Treatment while other members go away and work on how their role comes into this idea.
