Studio Shoot Treatment (First Draft)

Myself (Assistant Director) and Logan (Director) then moved on after writing the Synopsis to start forming the Treatment for this piece. However because their is so many elements to the Treatment which are all link to different people in the groups Job Roles we filled most of it out and some parts only with basic guidelines so that people could come and add to it depending on their role. Here is the version we created as a first draft:

Treatment Programme title: (Untitled Currently) Self-Image Reflection Studio Shoot Duration: 5:00 minutes Genre: Experimental Psychological Abstract Drama  Production Staff: Katherine Whetton (Producer) Nicole Harman-Smith (Assistant Producer) Production Date: 27/10/16 till 01/12/16 for Production Work and Set Up, 01/12/16 till 02/12/16 to Film Hand In Date: ?

Outline Production: We are taking inspiration from the photo ‘Untitled’ by Hannah Starkey (1997) looking at self-identity and mental health. The way the girl in this photo is holding the moth reflecting on it has inspired us to look into animal instincts, therefore bringing to mind the Freudian theory of the Id, Ego and Super Ego. We will start by having our actor/actress walk into the set which will have two sides to it. One evidentially good and one bad and the element that splits the two in half is the Mirror centered in the set about the size of a doorway. The character enters the good side seeming distressed for an unspecified reason. They walk past the mirror which is represented by an empty frame, at first it is just a reflection of the space and them. Then as they go to walk away they see a figure out the corner of their eye in the mirror. They will double back and go examine this figure which will be actor/actress 2. This figure is the Id but it begins calmly with them reflecting the movements of the character as if still a mirror. Then the Id will slowly get more distressed and begin to act out not exactly copying what the character is doing anymore. Then the character begins to realize this is no longer a reflection of their true self and will begin to fight back with the Id and control it. Things around the set slowly get more broken as the reality of the piece becomes broken. The fight is broken up by the two characters moving away from the mirror into their own space. Eventually the main good character decides to solve this problem by turning the mirror around so that they can be alone for a moment. When calm and alone they go back to the mirror and turn it back round again but just as they do this the Id lashes out and pulls them through the mirror to the broken side of the set. The Id then moves to the good side and walks away out of shot. The piece ends with what initially started as the good character in a heap on the floor in the broken side of the set. Target Audience: This piece will probably appeal and be aimed more towards a younger demographic because the issues of identity effect teenagers and developing adults much more. However this is not exclusive as it could be viewed and interpreted in a number of ways by many different people. Visual Elements: Lighting- Possible use of strobe or flashing lights at points to reflect anger On the calm side of the set maybe have it brighter Overall though keep it darker with some nice shadows (ollie to change/develop this with Logan and make plan) Camera Movement- Experimental camera work, lots of different angles and shots. Possible CCTV styled shot/angle Possible use of track Keep in mind the way you will need to film that will work around the mirror. (Ethan, Maisie and Sugini to change/Develop this) Editing- We want it to start slow and calm with slow cut aways. Then the pace of the piece will increase when the tension begins to rise with the Id character. We will look into sound and image manipulation to speed and slow down things to make it have a more dramatic effect. (Anyone can add to this if they want but this is just a rough guide as were not sure who will edit currently) Setting- (Jay to write this based on what was discussed in the meeting today) Actors- We will be holding auditions to find appropriate actors but we need two people who can act in similar ways and have very fluid and abstract movement to them. Dance training would be helpful to them. Either two females or two males as having different genders will confuse the viewer. Props- We need items which symbolise different aspects of that person and their mind. Half the items on the Id side will be damaged We need to source a frame to use as a pretend mirror. (Jay to develop and change this) Costume- Plainer the better, casual simple clothing that they can move in. The two actors need to have matching or similar costumes though. (Jay to develop this but anyone who is interested and has ideas can help) Audio Elements: Soundscape- Abstract Sounds that can add to the atmosphere of the piece. Maybe smashing and things breaking etc (Adi to develop this) Effects- (Adi to develop this) Music- Don’t know if music will work with this piece as it may end up too much like a dance video but could be used within a soundscape (Adi to develop this) Requirements and Resources: Cannon XF 305 Camera (unless camera team think otherwise) with external Microphone and boom pole, Tripod (track?) (Please can people add the other stuff they think of as we aren’t able to fully fill this out till we know) Constraints and Contingency: We only have two days with in the studio so we must stay on schedule and get it completed. We also need to make sure we are able to create our set efficiently with in the budget (200 pounds) and time frame. All members of the group need to stay in easy communication with each other or this will become an issue for the work flow. If we go over budget we need to agree what we are willing to spend out our own money. We must also pay to hire actors that fit the requirements. It must all stayed based upon our chosen image and theme and we will try not to go off topic.

This is just a starting point so if anyone wants to change anything just let us know or go ahead and fill in the appropriate sections to your role.

We have now shared this copy with the rest of our group so that they can add to and develop off of this in the relevant places so that shortly we will have a fully completed version to get our project signed off.
