After having another tutorial with my teacher Rosie I have decided to push the presentation of my idea further. A few ideas I have that I felt would work nicely are:
I felt like my idea was too wide spread in topic. It is about CCTV and Surveillance but the whole purpose is to prove to people that it is real people watching hence why within my piece you watch yourself. Another interesting aspect is that you can never see your face in the TV because the camera is directly in front of it. To play on both these keys points I want to route it into our modern culture by adding Graphics upon the white plinth and possible other places in my piece. This is to effect the younger generation (my age group/millennials) who have only ever lived in a society where these cameras are already present and therefore you don't even notice them anymore. Here is the 'Smile Your on CCTV' Graphic that first came to mind:
I like this because I remember seeing these in all sorts of places as a kid before I even could grasp the actual concept of what CCTV. When I did know what CCTV was but was still young and naive I would make a joke out of being filmed. I remember if a van drove past you with this on the side of it all the kids would always wave and pull faces at it. So what I am essentially wanting to do is take this reference to Popular modern culture and put it on my piece to make it routed in the younger technology generation. It will also be interesting to see if people would want to interact with this piece if it has these stickers all over it because as soon as they do they will realize they are watching themselves and then it sparks the main point of my piece which is to bring realization to what CCTV is.
I decided to see how easy it would be to get hold of stickers with this graphic up them which I can place all over my piece. I can't find stickers that are exactly like the sign above but there are actually many other versions you can buy. I could possible to create a culture overload use many different variations of these stickers and images you can buy and point lots of versions across the piece to reference this time in our society more than the generation in particular. I will need to see if I can get hold of enough for cheap enough.
I also thought into the data side of Surveillance in our culture. For example Social Media is used all the time and it tracks what we look at and uses that information to target adverts etc at us. Constantly when we are on social media and the internet it is tracking everything we are doing building up a network of information about us which is actually very invasive when you think about it. Therefore to add this second element to my piece instead of having the 'Smile Your on CCTV' graphics I could instead use computer coding which could be made out of code sourced on social media web pages like so:
I could wrap it around the white plinths and this means as someone is interacting with my piece and working out that it is Surveillance based they will then work out that it is also referencing the data footprint you have in the internet. However the only down fall with this approach is I don't know if this would over complicate the installation. Also after looking into wall stickers the same as I did for my other graphic they rent something you can buy already made. It seems that if I want to have computer code stickers I would have to find a way of making them which could prove hard and expensive to do.
After looking at both these ideas and thinking about how they could work in my idea I feel like if I am going to pursue any it will be the 'Smile you on CCTV' graphic. This just seems to sit a lot more comfortably with in my idea because it is a very familiar cultural reference. It will also attract more people towards my piece I think which is good because my piece is all about people needing to interact with it. The next step is to find and source myself these stickers along with the other Equipment I still need.
