During all the workshops and induction that we did on Friday 11th November (refer to Previous post) it started to become clear to me that even though we had had one meeting this morning that half the group were still in disagreement with the set plans that were made. Myself as Assistant Director and Logan as Director had agreed that we thought the piece would work better with an empty frame in the middle and an invisible divide between the space. Most people in the group agreed with this apart from the Camera Team (Masie, Ethan and Sugini) and the set designer (Jay) who thought the piece would still work better if we actually had a wall in between the two spaces so that it was like an E shape from above. I informed Katherine (Producer) and Logan of this and we all decided to call an emergency meeting after the lesson to discuss what everyones thoughts were on this.
My argument for not having the wall was that I felt it would restrict the actors moment and also I felt like it would restrict the kinds of camera shots we could do. I also thought having the wall was too literal and would make the viewer see our piece not as a mirror diving the space and the rooms reflecting one another but instead as two completely different spaces.
I voiced this to the group and thankfully Jay had thought this through and said that he was planning to dress the Doorframe in the wall that divided the two spaces with an actual frame he would make and hang on both sides around the gap. This would take away the confusion that it was a mirror hopefully. Then he said that the two spaces were still going to reflect each other through the props apart from one side would be clean an the other more messy and explosive. I felt like since he was set designer and had thought this through this was reasonable argument to have the wall. Katherine and Logan both agreed.
Also Ollie (Gaffa) after looking at the lighting in the room and other lighting he could use for his plans decided he also thought the wall would be quite helpful for him as he was planning on lighting the two spaces with the different colours and it would be a lot easier to control with the wall. I could see what he meant because if we didn't have the wall the two colours would spill into one another and this would make more work than necessary for him.
The camera team them voiced there opines and said that visually with a lot of shots they wanted to do the wall would work with in this anyway and they didn't feel like it would restrict them. Then they explained that trying to make the imaginary divide aware to the audience would actually be harder for them than if there actually was just a wall. I could see what they meant and as long as they we're happy to work with the wall I could see that it would be beneficially to our piece.
Me, Katherine and Logan then after taking everyones points on board agreed that a wall would be a more logical way to go about it and we also felt like it would keep the group happier and therefore workflow would be better so we went with the wall. This meeting was a difficult one because there was two divided groups with in the team however I felt like because we listened to everyone and spoke through it we all managed to make a decision together to have the wall and I fell like now knowing how everyone felt in the group it was the right decision to make.
