Surveillance Installation Technical Process Meeting

To help me better understand if my proposed Surveillance Piece will actually function and be acceptable for the space not only visually but technically I arranged a meeting with Tom Gilley who is a Technician that works with in the proposed spaces with set ups etc. I had a prepared list of questions I needed to ask and here is what we came to the conclusion of once I had asked everything:

He agrees with the equipment I have chosen to use and says none of it should be a problem with in the space. The one suggestion he did have was to make a three sided box out of MDF or something that could sit on the plinth over the camera and be secured to it to firstly hide the camera and also to make it look nicer.

He doesn't think that the camera will need padlocking down but says as long as their is a 3 sided cover/box over the top of it it should be fine with in the space. He also thinks that if my piece ends up in the corridor rather than the gallery then wall mounting the TV is a much better idea but in the gallery it will stand just fine on a plinth.

We then discussed the HDMI lead that I need and how long I need it to be and I have now found out that they have much longer HDMI cables available at the equipment hire which go up to 10 meters so sourcing that shouldn't be a problem.

I told him one thought process which was to mount the camera in the plinth and cut a hole so it was completely hidden however when he said the height of the white plights I realized this would be much too low for my piece to work. Therefore thats is why he wants me to keep the two teams on top of the plight at a much more user friendly level.

I was concerned about my cables causing an health and safety issues but after discussion I have realized that will all the resources available such as the longer cables I can have it either going across the ceiling so it won't be a trip hazard or I can have it across the floor as long as I use a safety cover for it and they also have hazard tape they can put down to warn people.

I must make sure that any of this technical equipment I wan tis booked out from Equipment Hire for the duration ion the entire Exhibition in advance so that I know I have access to it. Also I will need to book it all for my assessment on the 15th of December as well.

I asked about charging the camera overnight and he suggested just plugging in the power lead and having a constant power source to it instead the same as the TV so that all that needs to be done is to turn it off every night and on every morning.

My slight worry was about noise but he agrees using my TV is a clever way to solve this because I can leave the control for the volume with the Receptionist or a Technician like Tom who works in the Gallery so that they can turn the volume up and down as necessary because it will get too much for people if its on the entire time.

To be able to get two of these white plinths for the exhibition Tom suggested talking to either Rosie and getting her to arrange how many are needed for the class or to talk to the curator at the gallery space to see if he has enough for everyone. If not the resources manager Tipu will be able to help me find them.

Overall he has been really helpful to talk Tom the technician and he has answers all my questions and has given  me some really useful pointers and information.

To Do Now:
-Talk to Rosie to check she agrees on all Tom's advice.
-Test out the long 10m HDMI cable with the equipment to see if it works correctly.
-Book out the Camera and HDMI cables needed for the assessment date and for the Exhibition month in January.
-Speak to a Curator to discuss where my piece will end up going.
-Source the white Plinths ready for January.
-Build a Box to go on top of camera ready for January.
-Buy and Source 'Smile your on CCTV' stickers to decorate my piece.
