Studio Shoot Group Meeting 1

As I missed the initial group meeting this was the first I was able to attend but I was not the only one so instead we treated this as our first official meeting as a full group. Here are the notes I took:

-As a group we all picked up on the same kind of themes from the photos such as Isolation, Self Image and Mental Head Space.

-We discussed the possibility of Black and White shooting as three of the photos were black and white but we have now decided against this because we feel like this is unnecessarily limiting ourselves and would be too literal.

-We could not agree as a group which picture we wanted to do yet and we were wondering if basing it lovely on all of them would work. However concerns were raised which I agreed with that it would get too confusing to do this and instead we need to pick one idea based on one photo.

-We then went round the group and people shared their ideas they had so far. A few that came up were...
'Blind Fashion Show' : This idea was about finding blind actors or models and have them performing a abstract catwalk of some kind. I personally did not like this idea straight away because it seemed too literal linked to the photo Blind Twins. I also felt like it could end up being offensive if executed in the wrong way and overall it just seemed too risky. It is meant to be about isolation of blind people yet I felt like it could end up being more of a mock about the fashion industry so if this idea is chosen I feel like their is a lot more we need to figure out about it.

'Warped Self Image' : This idea was based more on the set design point of view. They really like the idea of using some kind of warped and disorientating mirrors to place around the set to create an abstract place based on the idea that people self image of themselves can be warped. The main concern a lot of people and myself found with this was that it will be very challenging to film with a lot of mirrors on the set. However a few of our camera team insisted this was possible. I feel like this set build would be very challenging for us though.

'Self Loathing' : Looking into the effects social media and our current day society has on people self image. Reflecting the documentary style of the old photos we were shown but essentially taking a new perspective. Im not sure this idea had much process behind it and is more of a general concept at this point but is possible to develop for next time.

- A lot more ideas came to light from many people but these were the main ones which were spoke about a lot more. A lot of the other ideas were also to do with self image and also a lot of people were thinking into mental illness. I then suggested my idea forward which was received well but still needs a lot of developing. My idea is...
'Mental Head Space' : This is based on the photo by Hannah Starkey with the girl staring at a moth trapped by the mirror. I want the set to represent an individuals mental head space by having it really dark and plain however there will be mirrors and words across the walls to make it seem abstract so it reflects that characters feelings and mental illness they have. I was thinking Schizophrenia or Multiple Personalty Disorder might be interesting to focus on. I want to start in the dark with a sound collage that represents the real place that character is but then it slows down and the lights fade up on set and the character is then talking to themselves in their own mental head space. They will pause every time the real world sound collage begins to play again. However whenever the noise stops and they are back in their head space again they are a different version of themselves to represent the voices in the head or the multiple people they feel they are. This idea is very basic at the moment and needs research to it but I feel like others in the group did like this idea and could possible get on board with helping to develop it and end up making something similar to this.

Another visual idea that our camera team liked was the concept of having an infinity mirror. They showed us images and videos of how they look and work and we as a group thought it could be really visually interesting if we are able to make or buy one.

Lastly we talked about basic things such as the £200 budget and the materials we will need for the set such as MDF etc.

We have all agreed to go away and research our ideas and concepts much more so that we can come to the next meeting with a full proof pitch and see which idea gets chosen by the group.
